Banai Banai, scientifically known as Radermachera quadripinnata (Blanco) Seem., is a native plant found is several countries across Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and nearby islands like Borneo, Malay Peninsula, Moluccas, Nicobar Isls., Sulawesi, and Sumatra. It belongs to the Bignoniaceae family.
This tree has leaves that are divided into 2–3 pairs, arranged opposite each other along a central stalk (pinnately compound). Its bark is rough, scaly, and often has deep cracks. The tree usually grows straight and tall.
Banai Banai produces bell-shaped flowers that range in color from pink to purplish. These flowers grow at the tips of branches, either alone or in clusters.
The tree bears long, capsule-like pods filled with many tiny seeds. When the pods ripen, they split open and release the seeds, which have papery or transparent wings that help them float in the air.
The wood of Banai Banai is valued for house construction, furniture making, wood carving, and even as an ornamental tree in gardens or landscapes.
