The Diploma in Environmental Planning graduate students from the UP Professional School for Agriculture and Environment – Northern Samar Campus conducted a short visit to the Makiling Botanic Gardens on 11 May 2026. Accompanied by the research, extension, and professional staff, the group explored the themed gardens and observed the landscape, architectural design, facilities, and overall development of the garden as a nature-based tourism destination. Forester Alexis Fajardo guided the participants through selected themed gardens, highlighting the conservation and management strategies implemented by the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems. The participants also expressed interest in learning about the operational mechanisms, institutional policies, and responsibilities of the University of the Philippines Los Baños in managing the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve ASEAN Heritage Park.
The discussion also focused on the center’s strategies embedded in the forest reserve’s ecological management plan, including landscaping techniques that enhance the visitor experience while protecting the integrity of its natural resources. The activity served as a valuable platform for strengthening the participants’ understanding of protected area management, sustainable environmental planning, and the development of nature-based tourism.
