On 07 January 2026, the Makiling Botanic Gardens welcomed the family of the late Dr. Blamar Gonzales for a ceremonial tree planting activity. Dr. Blamar Gonzales was a distinguished alumnus who made significant contributions to social development.
This ceremony served as a symbolic tribute to the late Dr. Blamar’s legacy and his undying commitment through service and advocacy in nation-building. The event was attended by representatives from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), including UPLB Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr.; UPLB Assistant to the Chancellor Dr. Eileen L. Mamino; and Dean Marlo Mendoza of the UPLB College of Forestry and Natural Resources. Present also at the event were Director Lerma SJ. Maldia; Deputy Director Alona C. Linatoc, Foresters Leilani A. Castillo, Angela L. Limpiada, and Alexis John T. Fajardo of the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems.
Upon insightful considerations, the Dillenia reifferscheidia (Katmon Kalabaw) species was selected to be planted, as it is recognized for its distinctive large leaf, white with pinkish streak flowers, broad canopy, and ecological resilience. These symbolic characteristics resonated deeply with the endurance, strength, and dedication evident in Dr. Gonzales’ life and his commitment to public service and social development.
