The Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG) Plant of the Month (POM) for June 2024 is the Kapal-kapal Baging, scientifically known as Hoya pubicalyx Merr. from the family Apocynaceae. The plant is endemic to the Philippines.
Kapal-kapal Baging is a climber or epiphytic and grows on trees along streams in damp forest areas. It has succulent lanceolate leaves and clusters of star-shaped inflorescence. The blooms have striking bright colors of pink, red, and nearly black hues that emit sweet fragrances during the night. It can also produce small pod-like fruits. The plant is cultivated for its ornamental value and is said to have air-purifying properties.
