The Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME) successfully conducted a three-day in-house training on Field GIS for Agroforestry Farm Mapping and Profiling using QGIS and QField from February 18 to 20, 2025. The event took place at the Toyota Environment Education Theater (TEET), Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG), College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).
For. Leonardo D. Barua, Head of the Social Forestry Division of MCME and Study Leader of the PGPC Project, served as the resource speaker. He guided participants through a series of discussions and hands-on exercises, emphasizing the application of GIS technology in agroforestry.
The training covered key topics, including an introduction to GIS, hands-on training in QGIS and QField, field data collection, farm mapping techniques, and best practices in agroforetsry profiling. Participants engaged in real-time field data collection and map generation using the software tools.
A total of 31 participants from various MCME divisions and project staff attended the workshop.
The training successfully enhanced participants’ GIS knowledge and skills, equipping them with essential tools for farm mapping and profiling. The hands-on approach ensured practical learning experiences, reinforcing the significance of GIS in sustainable natural resource management and agroforestry development.
The event highlighted MCME’s commitment to capacity-building initiatives that support environmental conservation and sustainable land management.
