On its 26th year of reorganization of the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME) and 61st anniversary of the Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG), the MCME staff celebrated the event through several activities on 25 June 2024. The program has two parts, Commemorative Tree Planting and Anniversary Party which was both held at the MBG. Started by a prayer led by For. Geine Joseph DM. Esguerra and followed by an Opening Remarks of MCME Director Lerma SJ. Maldia who expressed her gratefulness for being part of this memorable event. Brief history and introduction about Flora Medica were shared by For. Leilani A. Castillo. She explained that the theme garden was initially established in 2009 with the idea of showcasing some forest tree species with medicinal value. Only ten (10) seedlings with corresponding plant labels were planted by ten (10) staff. While others are planting, the rest of the group were asked to pick one plant label, find the species and put the label on the corresponding plant. Everybody enjoyed the activity as seen on the group photo taken at the Flora Medica site.
The second part was held at the newly refurbished MBG Toyota Environment Education Theater (TEET). Inspiring messages and anniversary greetings were shared by the different unit and division heads. All staff were given the chance to participate in the game prepared for the program, which is giving answers to trivia questions related to the event and some facts about Mount Makiling Forest Reserve (MMFR), MBG, and MCME. The second part also highlighted the awarding of Certificate of Participation to all MCME Nursery Staff who completed the refresher on Seedling Propagation and Biological Management in Forest Nursery which was held last 30 May 2024, also at MBG TEET. Eight (8) MCME Staff were also awarded a Certificate of Recognition as 2023 Most Outstanding Employee in their Field of Duties as Researcher, Extensionist, and Bukod-Tangi Awards as Office Supervisor, Field Supervisor, Professional Staff, Office Staff, Technical Staff and Blue Collar Personnel in the person of Leilani A. Castillo, Myranel S. Canceran, Arnulfo D. Yanoria, Gardie N. Canilan, Analyn C. Malayba, Emeterio A. Ramos, Geine Joseph D. Esguerra and Isagani T. Bunal, respectively.
The program was graced by a Closing Remarks of For. Nicasio M. Balahadia and a lunch of simple boodle fight for all staff. The celebration was short and simple but very meaningful to everyone. The role of being managers and protectors of Mount Makiling Forest Reserve is a huge responsibility but through unity and cooperation, all challenges can be faced and conquered.
