Mount Makiling Dwarf Skink is MBG’s Wildlife of the Month for November 2025

Hidden among the leaf litter of Luzon’s forested mountains lives one of the Philippines’ most elusive reptiles—the Mount Makiling Dwarf Skink (Parvoscincus abstrusus). True to its scientific name, which means “hidden” or “concealed” in Latin, this small lizard is rarely seen, quietly going about its life beneath logs and forest debris.

A Master of Camouflage

This slender skink is easy to identify by sex, as males and females display strikingly different colors. Males sport a striking black head and throat decorated with delicate bluish spots, while females wear a more subdued reddish-brown head with a cream-colored throat. Both sexes share a brown body adorned with dark vertebral spots that run from head to tail, helping them blend seamlessly into their forest floor habitat.

Where to Find Them

The Mount Makiling Dwarf Skink makes its home in the mid-elevation forests of several mountains across Luzon and nearby islands, including Mount Makiling, Mount Isarog, Mount Malinao, Mount Labo, and Polillo Island. These skinks thrive in both primary and secondary forests at elevations between 450 to 800 meters above sea level, where they hunt for invertebrates and insects among the leaf litter.

Conservation Concerns

Like many forest-dwelling species, the Mount Makiling Dwarf Skink faces growing threats from deforestation and environmental pollution. Protecting the remaining forest habitats where this species lives is crucial for ensuring these hidden gems continue to thrive in our mountain ecosystems.
