Nature-based tourism in MMFR: New batch of UPLB students completed the Educators for Nature Tourism Training Program

Nineteen 19 students joined the training for Educators for Nature Tourism conducted by MCME

On 25 February 2026, the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME) hosted the training for Educators for Nature Tourism (ENTs) held at the Toyota Environment and Education Theater (TEET), Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG). The training was participated in by a total of 19 students stemming from the College of Forestry and Natural Resources, College of Agriculture and Food Sciences, College of Economics and Management, Graduate School, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Agro-Industrial Technology of the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

Forester Angela Limpiada served as the host and resource speaker, providing the participants with the history of the Educators for Nature Tourism Program. It was further enriched with the testimonial of Forester Alexis Fajardo, a product of the ENTs program, who now serves as a resident guide and a staff member of the garden. The training underscored the University of the Philippines Los Baños’ commitment to educational tourism by uniting students from diverse disciplines under a shared mission of conservation.

The discussion focused on the key competencies necessary for effective park interpretation, the vital information that should be included in every tour, and the standards of professionalism expected from an Educator for Nature Tourism. The guiding principle at the heart of the training emphasized that each day presents an opportunity for learning. This mindset is essential for successfully implementing ecotourism programs within the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve ASEAN Heritage Park (MMFR AHP). Upon completing this program, these students will become part of the official pool of ENTs. They will be responsible for guiding visitors with excellence and integrity, while also fostering meaningful connections between nature and the community. (Article and photo by For. Alexis Fajardo)
