Seminar on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: Addressing Food Security and Micro-Climate Heat Index

On 09 August 2024, the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME) of the College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), organized a seminar on “Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: Addressing Food Security and Micro-Climate Heat Index” in Barangay San Miguel, Sto. Tomas City, Batangas. The event, funded by the Philippine Geothermal Production Company, Inc. (PGPC), is part of a broader project focused on scaling up participatory community-based natural resource management in the watersheds of Mount Makiling Forest Reserve and Mount Bulalo.

The seminar welcomed 30 participants, including local residents and barangay officials. Barangay Captain Hon. Renz Jerome M. Manzanilla opened the event, followed by remarks from MCME Director Dr. Lerma SJ. Maldia, emphasizing the importance of applying the seminar’s lessons in the community, demo farm, and individual households.

For. Nicasio M. Balahadia, head of the Social Forestry Division and project leader, presented the seminar’s objectives. Meanwhile, expert speakers discussed the following topics: Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation (Ms. Gillian Katherine I. Quilloy of DSFFG-CFNR), Mount Makiling Forest Reserve ASEAN Heritage Park as an Important Resource (For. Angela A. Limpiada of MCME), Cash Crop Production and Management (For. Nicasio M. Balahadia of MCME); Organic Farming: Concepts and Principles (For. Myranel S. Canceran of MCME); Botanical Pesticide and Vermiculture (For. Aldin C. Alegre of MCME); and Super Paso Preparation and Application (Mr. Gardie N. Canilan of MCME).

The different topics discussed in the seminar include Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation (Ms. Gillian Katherine I. Quilloy of DSFFG-CFNR); Mount Makiling Forest Reserve ASEAN Heritage Park as an Important Resource (For. Angela A. Limpiada ); Cash Crop Production and Management (For. Nicasio M. Alegre of MCME); and Super Paso Preparation and Application (Mr. Gardie N. Canilan of MCME).

The participants expressed gratitude during the open forum and received certificates of participation. The seminar concluded with a closing message from For. Canceran and was facilitated by For. Mary Anne G. Abadillos.
