The Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG) Plant of the Month (POM) for April 2021 is the “starleaf begonia.” It is scientifically known as Begonia heracleifolia var. nigricans Hook. F. that belongs to family Begoniaceae. Its place of origin is Mexico.
Starleaf begonia is a herbaceous plant that have succulent and hairy stems. Its leaves come in various sizes but all are star-shaped. The color of its flowers are white to light pink that blooms in summer time.
This plant is an important ornament and has been used for many hybrids.
