Livistona saribus (Lour.) Merr. ex. A. Chev popularly known as Tarau is the Makiling Botanic Gardens Plant of the Month for August 2018. Tarau belongs to family Arecaceae widely distributed in Southern China, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Philippines.
Its leaves are larger than Anahaw and are very good roofing materials. Its terminal bud can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable but note that harvesting the buds leads to the death of the palm. We have plenty of this in MBG so come and visit Tarau!
