On 13 August 2025, the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), in partnership with the Edu-Connect Southeast Asia Association–Taiwan, organized a learning visit to the Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG), Mount Makiling Forest Reserve (MMFR), under Project LAKBAY as part of their International University Social Responsibility (IUSR) program.
The activity gathered Taiwanese students and professors from Kaohsiung Medical University, along with Filipino students from UPOU under the Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS). Participants, aged 18 to 29, explored how MBG serves as a living laboratory for sustainability, biodiversity, and intercultural exchange.
The visit emphasized the role of MBG in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by providing a space that amplifies youth voices in sustainability-related programs. Through knowledge-based activities, intercultural engagement in language and traditions, and discussions on global and local challenges, the program fostered active learning while promoting IUSR values both locally and internationally.
Guided by Forester Alexis John T. Fajardo, the students toured the themed gardens and learned about the critical role of biodiversity conservation in addressing sustainability challenges. The experience not only enriched their understanding of environmental education but also offered a rejuvenating immersion in the natural beauty of the gardens.
Beyond the learning component, the visit strengthened institutional partnerships and highlighted the importance of youth education in driving sustainable development. By bridging cultures and perspectives, the collaboration showcased the potential of collective action in advancing environmental stewardship.
