Last 9 November 2018, thirty (30) farmers from Barangays Bitin, Bay and Limao, Calauan in Laguna have learned the basic procedures of mushroom production during the training held at Mr. Ricardo Pitogo’s residence in Barangay Limao, Calauan, Laguna. The training aimed to equip the participants with basic knowledge and skills on production of different marketable mushroom species. It also aimed to teach the farmers the basic marketing of mushroom and use of underutilized raw materials available on their environment in mushroom production.

The training was part of the “Indigenous-Tree Based Agroforestry Development Program” implemented by the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME) sponsored by the Philippine Geothermal Production Company Inc. (PGPC) in collaboration with Dr. Emerlito Borromeo, a private business entrepreneur and the manager of the SciFarm Enterprises.

Dr. Borromeo provided a lecture and a demonstration of straw mushroom propagation using the dried banana leaves as a medium. He shared the step by step procedure of mushroom production, when the mushroom germinate and how and when to harvest mushroom. He mentioned that series of harvesting can be done until all mushroom germinated and reached maturity.

Truly, mushroom production is an easy, economical and sustainable alternative livelihood that all farmers can invest on.
