The Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG) Plant of the Month (POM) for November 2019 is the “indian rosewood” or scientifically known as Dalbergia latifolia Roxb. It belongs to family Fabaceae. It is native to India and Java, Indonesia.
The indian rosewood have high commercial value. It is internationally protected under the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) together with other rosewood species. Its wood has a lot of uses namely: quality furniture, small boats, musical instruments, carved instruments, and veneer used in making plywood.
In addition, people give high regard to indian rosewood as a spiritual tree. It symbolizes kindness and a good heart.
