The Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG) Plant of the Month (POM) for November 2023 is the Kalubkob, scientifically known as Syzygium calubcob (C.B. Rob.) Merr. from the family Myrtaceae. The plant is native to the Philippines and Sulawesi.
Kalubkob is an evergreen tree growing to 10m tall with at least 30 cm in diameter. Its leaves are simple, arranged in opposite directions with elliptic-oblong to lanceolate leaf shapes while its flowers are whitish to light yellowish color located at the terminal or subterminal of racemes. It has a subglobose fruit with fleshy pulp that turns yellow-green when ripe and is edible.
The parts of this tree have several uses. Its wood is used for temporary construction and may also be used as a material for musical instruments, tool handles, furniture components, shipbuilding, flooring, etc. While its fruits can be a source of food.
