Niog-niogan is MBG’s Plant of the Month for January 2021

Niog-niogan is the Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG) Plant of the Month (POM) for January 2021. The “Niog-niogan” or scientifically known as Ficus pseudopalma Blanco belongs to family Moraceae.

It is also known as lubi-lubi and palm-like fig endemic to the Philippines. The young leaves of niog-niogan are edible. It can be eaten raw or cooked as vegetable. The mature leaves have medicinal value used to treat hypertension, diabetes, kidney stones, and high cholesterol. Its fruits can also be used to make anti-parasitic drugs or anthelmintic.
