Brown-breasted Kingfisher is MBG’s Wildlife of the Month for April 2026

With its rich chestnut-brown head, breast, and underparts contrasting beautifully against bright blue wings and back, the Brown-breasted Kingfisher (Halcyon gularis) is a medium-sized bird that stands out in the Philippine landscape. Its large red bill adds a striking accent to this colorful combination.

A Versatile Hunter

The Brown-breasted Kingfisher is a generalist predator, feeding on insects, small reptiles, amphibians, and occasionally fish. This broad diet reflects its ability to exploit both terrestrial and aquatic food resources. The species is often observed perched on branches, wires, or exposed perches while scanning for prey below.
