In a momentous recognition of its contribution to local tourism, the Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG) was awarded the “Most Visited Tourism Establishment” award during the 2025 Los Baños Turismo Awards held on 17 September 2025 at the CPP Memorial Stadium and Evacuation Center. The Los Baños Turismo Awards, held annually, aim to recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements of tourism establishments in the municipality. The “Most Visited Tourism Establishment” category, in particular, acknowledges the importance of tourism in local economic development and the ability of businesses and organizations to attract and engage visitors year-round.
The award honors the MBG for being one of the top tourism destination in the area for the year 2024, highlighting its important role in increasing tourism and environmental advocacy in Los Baños, Laguna. The recognition was formally presented to Dr. Lerma SJ. Maldia, Director of the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME), who received the award alongside former MCME Deputy Director Prof. Juancho Balatibat and For. Angela A. Limpiada of the Botanic Gardens Park and Ecotourism Division (BGPED). Their leadership, together with the dedication of the entire team, has been instrumental in enhancing the garden’s facilities, programs, and overall visitor experience.
Nestled at the foot of the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve ASEAN Heritage Park (MMFR AHP), the 300-hectare botanic gardens is a haven for nature enthusiasts, researchers, and casual visitors alike. Home to diverse plant collections, scenic walking trails, and educational programs, it has evolved into a central hub for ecotourism in the region.
Beyond serving as a tourist attraction, MBG plays a crucial role in advancing ecological awareness. Through its guided tours, school-oriented learning activities, and research partnerships, the garden fosters deeper appreciation of biodiversity and conservation. It also collaborates with various environmental organizations, further strengthening its advocacy for sustainable management of natural resources.
The garden’s growing popularity is reflected in its impressive visitor record. In 2024 alone, MBG welcomed around 25,000 guests, both local and international drawn by its tranquil atmosphere and opportunities to learn about native flora and fauna. Its trails, picnic spots, and birdwatching areas also make it a favored destination for relaxation and recreation, offering a refreshing escape from urban life.
This recognition solidifies the MBGs’ status as a cornerstone of ecotourism in the region, underscoring the vital role that natural spaces play in advancing both environmental conservation and sustainable tourism. Looking ahead, the gardens remain steadfast in their commitment to excellence, with plans to enhance facilities, enrich visitor experiences, and expand educational outreach programs.
As Los Baños’ tourism industry continues to flourish, the MBG is poised to remain at the heart of the town’s efforts to promote responsible, inclusive, and environmentally conscious tourism. This recognition not only celebrates past achievements but also serves as a challenge to further strengthen its impact in ecotourism and conservation. With its growing popularity and unwavering dedication to environmental education, the MBG stands as a proud symbol of Los Baños’ unique blend of natural heritage, community spirit, and sustainable tourism.
