Los Baños, Laguna – The Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME) commemorated its 27th founding anniversary on June 25, 2025, in tandem with the 62nd anniversary celebration of the Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG), which was held earlier on June 20. The joint celebration highlighted MCME’s enduring commitment to forest conservation, research excellence, and community engagement within the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve ASEAN Heritage Park.
The anniversary program opened with a prayer, followed by an inspiring message from Dr. Lerma S.J. Maldia, Director of MCME, who emphasized the Center’s achievements over the years and its continuous pursuit of excellence in environmental stewardship and sustainable ecosystem management.
A key highlight of the occasion was the Awarding Ceremony for Outstanding Staff and Projects, recognizing individuals and teams for their exceptional contributions to the Center’s operations and mandates.
Under the Outstanding Administrative Awards, the following personnel were honored:
- Romer P. Mada, Elpidio M. Tejano, and Walderico A. Victoria – Bukod-Tangi Blue Collar Staff
- Aerosmith M. Masa – Bukod-Tangi Technical Staff
- Jasper Jason T. Madrigal – Bukod-Tangi Field Supervisor
- Ofelia F. Manasan – Bukod-Tangi Office Supervisor
- Isadora T. Opulencia – Bukod-Tangi Office Staff
Meanwhile, the Outstanding Research and Extension Awards were given to:
- For. Karla Jane P. Gonzalvo – Outstanding Researcher in Natural Sciences (Junior Category)
- For. Angela A. Limpiada, MSc. – Outstanding Extension Personnel in Social Sciences and Humanities (Junior Category)
- For. Leonardo D. Barua, MSc. – Outstanding Extension Personnel in Social Sciences and Humanities (Senior Category)
Two exemplary initiatives also received institutional recognition:
- Outstanding Extension Project: “Scaling-up the Participatory Community-based Natural Resources Management in Four Watersheds of Mount Makiling Forest Reserve and Mount Bulalo”
- Outstanding Research Team: “Habitat Care Program”
The event not only honored individual and team achievements but also celebrated decades of dedicated service, scientific innovation, and environmental stewardship. The anniversary served as a reminder of MCME’s vital role in conserving the natural heritage of Mount Makiling, while strengthening its collaboration with partners and the community through sustained research, education, and extension.
